Access control and security cameras used to live on separate wiring, separate contractors, and separate closets. That has changed. Here are five real questions to work through before installing or upgrading both systems.

Businesses used to treat access control and security cameras as two entirely separate projects, each with its own contractor and its own bundle of wire in the walls. Modern systems have quietly merged. Both run on ethernet, both can share the same switches, and both are far more useful when they talk to each other. The five questions below cover what to think about before installing or upgrading them together.

Should access control and security cameras share the same cabling infrastructure?

Access control and security cameras can share the same cabling infrastructure and often should, because both systems run on Cat6 or Cat6a and both can use Power over Ethernet. Sharing the physical cabling backbone simplifies installs, keeps everything documented in the same place, and lets the two systems tie together at the recorder or management platform. On the network side, the two systems usually live on separate VLANs even when they share physical switches, which keeps camera traffic from stepping on access control traffic and vice versa. One cable pull instead of two also reduces the total mess in the ceiling and cuts the number of terminations that need to be tested at handover. The main pitfall is running both systems through the same undocumented mess of cable in an older building. If a business is starting from a clean slate or planning a real cabling refresh, colocating the two systems is almost always the right call.

What cable is used for access control readers?

Modern access control readers are almost always wired with standard Cat6 or Cat6a ethernet cable, terminated the same way as a camera or a workstation. This is a real shift from older systems, which usually ran on bundled multi-conductor cable specific to the reader brand and required a separate power run to each door. IP-based readers use PoE for both power and data over a single cable, which cuts the install time and simplifies future changes. The distance limit is the same as any ethernet run, roughly 328 feet from switch to reader including patch cables. Some accessories at the door still use traditional low voltage wiring. The request-to-exit sensor, the door strike, and any auxiliary relays typically wire back to the access control panel with 18 or 22 gauge cable. A well planned install pulls the ethernet drop for the reader at the same time as the low voltage wiring for the door hardware, so the door opening only gets opened once. How do access control events tie into camera footage?

Access control events tie into camera footage through integration between the access control platform and the video management system, so a card swipe or door opening triggers a bookmarked clip you can retrieve instantly. This is the feature most businesses do not realize they want until they see it work. Instead of scrubbing through hours of footage to find the moment a door opened, staff can pull up an event log, click on the swipe, and jump straight to the video from the camera that covers that door. Integration usually happens in software at the platform level, which is why picking a modern access control system and a modern video management system that speak the same integrations matters more than the specific brand of hardware. On the network side, both systems need to be reachable from the same management console, which usually means routing between VLANs is planned intentionally rather than left to defaults.

A business should upgrade its access control system when the readers are more than about ten years old, when the software vendor stops issuing updates, when card badges are being cloned, or when growth adds doors the current system was not designed to cover. Older card technology (the plain 125 kHz proximity cards common in the 2000s) is trivial to clone with a device that costs less than a coffee, which is a real security gap even in a small office. Modern systems use encrypted credentials and support mobile phone credentials that are much harder to duplicate. Upgrading is also the natural moment to tie access control into the camera system properly, so events and footage line up automatically.
