A practical look at what goes into linking two buildings with fiber
Businesses with two buildings on the same property often need them to feel like one network. Here is what a proper fiber link between buildings involves and why it is worth planning carefully.
Businesses that grow into a second building on the same property usually want the two locations to feel like one network. Shared file storage, shared phones, shared security cameras, a single internet connection feeding both. Copper cannot cover that distance reliably, which is why the answer is almost always fiber. The good news is that a fiber link between two buildings is a well understood project. The tricky part is planning it before shovels move.

Why copper stops being an option
Standard ethernet over copper caps out around 328 feet from switch to device. That number includes everything, wall runs, patch cables, and jumps through patch panels. Two buildings even fifty yards apart usually blow through that limit once you account for the path the cable actually has to take. Trying to solve this with a series of switches between the buildings is fragile and creates several points of failure outside. Fiber solves the distance problem cleanly and does not care about the electrical interference that outdoor runs often introduce.

The path matters more than the cable
The single biggest decision on a building to building fiber project is the path the cable will take. There are usually three options. Aerial runs on poles are the fastest and cheapest but expose the fiber to weather and physical damage. Direct burial runs the cable underground in armored jacket, which is more durable but requires digging. Conduit runs bury a protective pipe first and pull the fiber through it, which costs more upfront but makes future replacements or upgrades painless. For most businesses, conduit is the smartest long term choice, especially if the ground is going to be paved over or landscaped later.

What actually gets installed at each end
A proper building to building fiber run does not just terminate at a random jack on the wall. Each end usually lands in a fiber patch panel or wall mount enclosure inside the network closet of that building. From there, short fiber patch cables jump into a switch that has fiber ports, either directly or through small optical transceivers. This makes the two buildings behave like one continuous network, so a phone in Building B rings on the same system as a phone in Building A, and a camera outside Building B records back to the same NVR sitting in Building A.
The best time to run fiber between two buildings is before the ground gets paved, before the landscaping goes in, or before the second building is fully finished. Retrofitting the same link a year later almost always costs more and looks worse.
