A plain guide to picking the right fiber type for your building and network
Fiber is not a single product. Single-mode and multi-mode fiber serve different purposes, and picking the wrong one can waste money or cap your network's growth. Here are five real questions to work through before you buy or install.
Fiber optic cabling is often talked about as one thing, but it is not. Two very different types dominate business installs, and each is designed for a different job. Picking the right one on the front end avoids expensive rework later, especially when the walls are already closed up. The five questions below cover what matters when the fiber decision is on the table.

What is the difference between single-mode and multi-mode fiber?
Single-mode fiber carries a single, narrow beam of laser light down a very thin glass core built for long distances. Multi-mode fiber uses a wider core and lets multiple light paths bounce through it at once, which works well over shorter distances at high speeds. That physical difference drives everything else about how each type performs. Single-mode cores are around nine microns wide and pair with laser light sources, which is why single-mode can carry signal for kilometers without losing quality. Multi-mode cores are usually fifty or sixty two and a half microns wide and traditionally paired with LED light sources, though modern multi-mode also uses lasers for higher speeds over short runs. You can spot the two visually. Single-mode jackets are almost always yellow. Multi-mode is aqua for the current OM3 and OM4 grades, or orange for older OM1 and OM2. The two are not interchangeable, and knowing which one you need before ordering saves a lot of pain.

When should a business use single-mode fiber?
A business should use single-mode fiber when the run is long, when it goes between buildings, when the network is expected to scale in bandwidth over time, or when the internet provider is bringing fiber to the building. Distance is the biggest driver. Single-mode can carry signal across kilometers without needing a repeater, which is why any run between two structures on the same property almost always uses it. If your building is part of a campus, a medical complex, or a warehouse operation spread across multiple lots, single-mode is usually the answer. It is also the safer bet when you are unsure how much bandwidth you will need in five or ten years, because single-mode transceivers keep improving and the same glass can support far higher speeds later without replacing the cable. When is multi-mode fiber the better choice?
Multi-mode fiber is the better choice for shorter runs inside a single building, especially between switches in the same closet or between wiring closets on different floors, where the distance is under about four hundred meters and cost matters. The main reason to pick multi-mode in that scenario is the electronics. Multi-mode transceivers are meaningfully cheaper than their single-mode counterparts, and when you multiply that cost across every switch port on both ends of every run, the savings add up. Multi-mode also terminates a bit more forgivingly, which can trim install time in a large deployment. The classic use case is a server room or a data closet where you need high speed links between switches, storage arrays, or backup systems that sit within a few racks of each other. If you are running fiber between floors of the same office building, multi-mode usually covers it comfortably and leaves budget for other things.
You can identify existing fiber by its jacket color, the printed markings on the outer sheath, and the type of connectors on the patch panel. Yellow jackets indicate single-mode. Aqua jackets are OM3 or OM4 multi-mode. Orange usually means older OM1 or OM2 multi-mode, common in installs from the early two thousands. Along the length of the cable, small printed text usually spells out the exact grade (for example "OS2 9/125" for single-mode or "OM4 50/125" for multi-mode). Inside the wiring closet, the patch panel labels and the connector style give you the same information.
