A practical look at when fiber is worth the investment and when copper still holds up
Fiber gets a lot of attention, but it is not always the right answer. Here is a plain look at the situations where fiber earns its keep and the ones where copper still does the job.
Fiber has a certain reputation. Faster, cleaner, future proof. All of that is true in the right situation, and completely oversold in others. For most small and mid sized businesses, the honest answer to "should we run fiber?" depends less on hype and more on the actual distances, buildings, and workloads involved.

What fiber actually gives you
Fiber runs signal as light through thin glass strands instead of electricity through copper. That single difference solves a few problems copper cannot. Fiber carries data much farther without losing quality, it is not affected by electrical interference from motors or fluorescent lighting, and it can handle enormous amounts of traffic without breaking a sweat. That combination is why fiber is standard for internet provider connections into a building and for links between buildings on a shared campus. It is also why it makes sense inside a business when the workload really pushes the network.

When copper still makes perfect sense
For the average office where users are on laptops, phones, and cloud apps, modern copper cabling handles everything easily. Cat6 and Cat6a can push gigabit and multi gigabit speeds across the distances found inside a typical building. It is cheaper to install, easier to terminate, and easier to modify when a business rearranges its layout. If a business is not sending huge files constantly, not running heavy on premise servers, and does not have runs longer than about 300 feet, copper is usually the right call. Choosing fiber in that setting adds cost without adding benefit anyone will feel.

The situations where fiber earns its keep
There are a few clear moments when running fiber inside a building is the right investment. Connecting two buildings on the same property is one, because copper simply cannot cover that distance reliably. Long horizontal runs inside a large warehouse, hospital, or campus setting are another. Businesses that move a lot of data through their network internally, video production shops, engineering firms with large CAD files, medical practices with imaging systems, benefit from fiber backbones between switches. Any environment with a lot of electrical interference, like a manufacturing floor, is another strong case. Fiber shrugs off noise that would degrade copper.
The decision between fiber and copper is not really about which one is better. It is about what your building looks like, how far your runs need to go, and how your business actually uses the network.
